CNN: Is Marriage For White People?

CNN Presents Black in America: The Black Woman & Family aired last night, for those that missed it CNN published an article exploring one of the topics touched on during the special the discrepancy between the marriage rates of white women and black women. According to the 2006 Census, 43% percent of black women have never been married compared to 26% of white women. Some point to the growing differences in education levels between black women and men, black women outnumber black men in college nearly 2-1. Others point to the disproportionately high rate of black men that are or have been imprisoned (41% of the nation’s 2 million inmates) and once released they struggle to stay out of prison and to get competitive jobs preventing them from making themselves desirable candidates for marriage. While some still point to fact that black women are less likely to date outside their race thus limiting their relationship options, an issue not shared by black men who frequently marry outside their race.
