A Naive Young White Woman

Sometimes its hard for us to as black people (and people of color as a whole) to accept the fact that some white people JUST DON'T GET IT. Will Smith said Parents Just Dont Understand, I say (some) Whites Just Dont Understand. They are just naive and sheltered from the real world. When they look out into a world of white privilege and open doors they just don't realize that there are truly 2 America's.That blacks and all people of color in this country are treated as second class citizens by the government, the judicial system, businesses, colleges, the police and many times by the same whites themselves that believe we are all just one big happy nation working and playing together in equality. Kum Bi Ya my Ass! This sort of naiveness (a word I use in an attempt to not call her and others like her ignorant) and blindness to the true realities of this country upset me to an unmeasurable degree. How someone can live in a world for 25+ years and never truly see it for what it is, is beyond me. But what adds insult to injury for me is how these naive individuals are the first people to engage in long drawn out arguments defending their naive and unrealistic point of views. I hope that the topic of race and inequality continues to be explored on a mainstream level for years to come, so that naive white people like her can finally start to take off their blinders and see this country for what is truly is, for better or for worse.

Common & Lauren Hill's Retrospect For Life is classic without a doubt, easily one of the best and most thought provoking hip-hop songs of all time. This song embodies everything that is right about hip-hop, If they played this song @ abortion clinics people would walk out. CNN: Is Marriage For White People?

CNN Presents Black in America: The Black Woman & Family aired last night, for those that missed it CNN published an article exploring one of the topics touched on during the special the discrepancy between the marriage rates of white women and black women. According to the 2006 Census, 43% percent of black women have never been married compared to 26% of white women. Some point to the growing differences in education levels between black women and men, black women outnumber black men in college nearly 2-1. Others point to the disproportionately high rate of black men that are or have been imprisoned (41% of the nation’s 2 million inmates) and once released they struggle to stay out of prison and to get competitive jobs preventing them from making themselves desirable candidates for marriage. While some still point to fact that black women are less likely to date outside their race thus limiting their relationship options, an issue not shared by black men who frequently marry outside their race.

John McCain releases commercial Mocking The Medias Love For Obama

Straight up this shit is hilarious, I don't know that this helps McCain win votes but it's great to see this all documented in 1 place. The things some of these male journalist says about Obama I'm sure they don't even say about their wives, things like "I felt this feeling up my leg and I don't get that too often." Definitely borderline man-crush type shit. Fuckin' Hilarious!

I'm sure if we were in the YouTube era when John F. Kennedy was running for office, Nixon would have released a similar video mocking the medias love affair with John F. Kennedy, which even continues to this very day.

Woman Is The Nigger Of The World?

While listening to "America" one of the tracks off Nas' New Album Untitled (formerly known as N*gger) it was brought to my attention that Nas' perspective on womens place in todays society mirrors that of one John Lennon. In the song Nas pays homage to John Lennon's highly controversial but often forgotten 1972 song "Woman is the Nigger of the World" with these lyrics:

"Y'all don't treat women fair
She read about herself in the bible
Believing she the reason sin is here
You played her, with an apron
Like bring me my dinner, dear
She the nigger here"

In John Lennon's "Woman is the Nigger of the World" he writes:

"We insult her every day on TV
And wonder why she has no guts or confidence
When she's young we kill her will to be free
While telling her not to be so smart, we put her down for being so dumb"

The above video is of John Lennon on the Dick Cavett Show as he offers his explanation for the controversial song. WATCH THE VIDEO. At the time when the song was released, it was banned from radio and subsequently swept under the rug by mainstream media, who maybe weren't ready to explore such such progressive concepts . The record was truly years ahead of its time. Co-founder of the Congressional Black Caucus / Current Mayor of Oakland Ron Dellums’ definition of the word Nigger helped strengthen Lennon’s defense of the song:

“If you define nigger as someone whose lifestyle is defined by others, whose opportunities are defined by others, whose role in society is defined by others, then I have good news! – You don’t have to be black to be a nigger in this society. Most of the people in America are niggers”

To bring this topic full circle my friend Tony's mom (who just to put in proper context is a white woman and without a doubt one of my favorite people; kind, genuine and honest) said to me after Obama won the Democratic Nomination that Barak's nomination shows that white men (even racist southerners) would rather vote for a black man then a white women; symbolizing womens place in society. At the time I said in response, "If that was the only basis for them voting for Obama over Hillary (which it clearly wasn't) then I can definitely see where you're coming from".

From a purely race/sex standpoint the "concept" that even racist white men put black men (whom they are supposed to hate for no reason) above a white women would imply that sexism in and of itself supersedes racism. Definitely SOMETHING TO THINK ABOUT whether you agree with it or not. But rather than try to make an argument for or against (and you know I could), I'm actually more curious to know, what are thoughts on the matter?

Is woman the Nigger of the world?
Does sexism supersede racism?

I'm going to keep this short and sweet. I used to hop on the internet and go to 10 to 15 different hip-hop, sports and news sites because each site offered a little something I couldn't find on another site. It wasn't very efficient at all but it was all I knew until.....I discovered Google Reader! Google Reader allows you to collect the content (via RSS Feed Subscriptions) of several different websites and consolidate them into web page page. CNN will be airing a series called Black in America , its very relevant and definitely worth watching. Lately I've noticed more open commentary about race and race-relations in this country than ever before. Which is great, I encourage and personally I think its long overdue.

On Wednesday, July 23rd CNN Presents: Black in America continues with "The Black Woman & Family." Soledad O'Brien explores the varied experiences of black women and families and investigates the disturbing statistics of single parenthood, racial disparities between students and the devastating toll of HIV/AIDS. O'Brien reports on the progress of black women in the workplace and the status of the black middle class. If you're out getting fucked up like me when the show airs TiVo it.

Nas- Sly Fox Music Video!

A few blogs back I said that Nas' album is shaping up to be maybe the most relevant hip-hop album of all time and it looks as though judging by his newest video "Sly Fox" that I may be correct. In this video Nas is encouraging people to think outside the box, literally. I wont do to much analysis on this one, the song and the video pretty much speak for themselves. But I will say this, It's videos like this that hip-hop's has BEEN missing, reminds me of the good ol' Public Enemy days.

American Sports Media Racist? Ya Think?

Guest host of ESPN's popular sports talk show PTI: Pardon The Interruption Dan Le Batard said at 7:40 mark in the clip, that Baseball and the American Media are pretty much racist toward black players who struggle with drug related issues and overcome them, while at the same time they're constantly searching for some Great White Hope to put on a pedestal when one of the white players struggle with the same issues and overcome them. A year ago you would never hear an announcer on ESPN ever even attempt to say some shit this real as it pertains to race in America, they would just dance around the real issue as they're paid to do. As an avid ESPN watcher (hours upon hours a day) this is a reflection of the changing climate in America, with a Black President on the horizon the issue of race and racism in America can no longer be swept under the rug. More individuals in the media need to take a more honest and introspective look at their roles in perpetuating racial biased stories and images in the media, because as much as they'd like to let you think this, Don Imus is NOT the ONLY ONE.

The funniest part to me is how the other announcer we'll call him Confused White Man # 1, 230,043 tried to argue against this painfully obvious FACT. Citing that Le Batard's stance was too easy of a stance to take. Was it too easy of a stance to take because its too obvious???

WOW!! Joe Budden - Who Pt. 1

WOW! That’s all I can say about this song, Joe Budden just took us on a real ride down hip hop blvd with such perspective and insight as he analyzed all the pieces and player involved in the demise of hip-hop or at least it’s fall from prominence. Joey’s proclivity to juxtapose situations and scenarios raises many important and relevant questions for both the fans and the artists in hip-hop. His candor and honesty garner a great deal of respect from me as he left no stone unturned and didn’t shy away from questioning the motives and intentions of even today’s most popular artists and producers. From the Roc-a-fella Records meltdown to everyone dick riding that funny voice shit, Joe Budden let the game have on this record.

Independence Day Ba Humbug!!!!!!!

I'm not really to interested in celebrating the 4th of July. Simply because my people weren't given our independence on July 4th, we were given our independence on December 6, 1865 when the 13 Amendment was ratified. The previous Emancipation Proclamation was a half ass effort by a desperate Lincoln searching for a way to win The Civil War. The Emancipation Proclamation it self did not free all slaves, it declared free only those slaves that had already escaped the southern slave states and migrated to the northern states, hence it only freed already freed slaves (so they could join the Union Army and Navy, subsequently turning the tide in the war). It wasn't until the 13 Amendment was ratified years later that slaves were truly declared free, but even after it was ratified, Mississippi the lone rogue state refused to sign the Amendment until 1995, talk about being arrogant with your racism...reason number 36 while you'll never catch me living in punk ass Mississippi.

But my question is why isn't my peoples independences relevant enough to be considered a National Holiday? After all that blacks have done for America, we built this country from the cotton fields up, we're even about to see our first Black president but no Black Independence Day??? That's some bullshit for real. I shouldn't ever have to go to work on December 6th again, it should be a paid holiday because we all know Blacks have paid the price in this country and even today we continue to.

So I guess I'm on my lyrics tip right now, today and yesterday have been all about the lyrics. Today's song is called "What You Got" by Colby O’danis f/Akon, this songs is lyrically real ass fuck, the type of girl Colby is talking about in this song really represents a lot of hoes I KNOW in L.A.So you know the song really hit close to home for me. Sometimes people don’t get the message until its put in the form of the song….Well here it is, girl you know that you need to stop. If you live in Los Angeles like myself then I’m sure every time you turn on the radio this Akon heavy record is playing, but my question is are you getting the message?? The basic premise of the song is he (Colby) sees this fine ass gold digger bitch and he knows she just a hollow materialistic whore who fills the void inside with the items she can pimp a nigga for but even with all that Colby like a classic man he's somehow still drawn to her trying to pursue her and get her to change her ways….Classic scenario of trying to turn a hoe into a house wife....It never works ask Kurupt.

My homie robnigga is fighting the song and for that I can not blame him, the overall cheesy ass pop way the record was created is a turn off for many real niggas and once you see Colby O’donis’ cornball looking ass it further takes away from the perception of the legitimacy of the record; But even with all that this is real ass song, point blank period. It needs to be more songs like this in my opinion. The last few songs that we had that really denouncing this mentality were “Gold Digger” and “Wouldn’t Get Far”, now we just need a legit R&B artist to drop a record on this subject and maybe some of these gold diggers will take a more introspective look at themselves and their behavior and change their ways.

Diddy On Hancock And The Black Super-Hero

I'm the first to say I don't agree with most of what Diddy does or says (from his shady one sided "J. Jerk-A- Nigga" contracts to his highly publicized violent public outbursts) but this video blog is on point. If you look past the nonsense and focus on what he was trying to say the message is clear, relevant and definitely one that needed to be said. I'm feeling the fact the Diddy stepping up and is speaking on issues and I encourage and support other celebs that are in positions of power and influence to do so as well.

Now I know that black celebs talking about positive shit and encouraging black youth to have self-esteem, a higher sense of self worth and the ambition to reach for the stars (the ones between venus and mars not the ones that be reading from cards) may not get as much press as black celebs getting arrested, accused of rape or knocked out at the club. But I still feel like its important for them to address some real issues from time to time, rather than try to live in this impartial indifferent politically correct bubble fantasy world where the real issues that matter to real people are not on their radar and thus don't effect their reality and are never spoken upon by them.

I think that the black image in America needs to undergo a major make-over. We desperately need there to be more blacks in the media on any and all levels saying positive and progressive while bringing some much needed positive press to the black image in America. The O.J bullshit, The Mike Vick Bullshit, the Kobe Bullshit, The 2 Pac Bullshit, The Tyson Bullshit, The 25+ black NFL players being arrested in the last 3 seasons bullshit have only contributed to an already poor, negative and inaccurate public image of blacks in America. It's time for those mishaps which are of course amplified and overblown by the media to stop defining us as a people, its time for blacks all the way across the board to reverse this trend whether the media is willing to televise it or not. So Young Jeezy met presidential hopeful and dinosaur John McCain on the set of SNL and had this to say about their encounter.
